Free Rig

Free Rig

The free rig is a bass fishing presentation that uses a free-sliding cylinder weight on the line to give soft plastic baits a natural, unrestricted fall.
Originating in South Korea and popularized in Japan before arriving in the United States, this setup modifies the classic Texas rig. Instead of a fixed or pegged bullet weight, the line passes directly through a circular eyelet on a cylinder or bell-shaped weight before tying to the hook.
When you cast the free rig, the bottom-heavy, free-sliding weight drops straight to the bottom quickly with minimal resistance. Meanwhile, your soft plastic bait drifts down leisurely behind it. This action creates separation between the weight and the lure.
